In Essentials Hamster & Gerbil Food, timothy grass meal is followed by hulled barley, oat groats, canola meal and millet. Crude protein is at least 15%, crude fat at least 4.5% and crude fibre 10 to 15%, which is fibre rich for a hamster food. Some minerals are chelated, which according to the manufacturer improves absorption; natural tocopherols and rosemary extract are used as preservatives. Uniform pellets mean the animal cannot pick out only the tastiest pieces. Prebiotics support digestion.
According to the manufacturer's table, the daily amount is about 15 g for a small hamster and about 40 g for a gerbil or large hamster; the exact amount is on the pack. Young animals under 6 months and pregnant or nursing females may eat freely. Switch to the new food gradually over four weeks.

Feeding guide
According to the manufacturer's table: adult small hamster 1/8 cup (about 15 g) per day; gerbil or large hamster 1/3 cup (about 40 g) per day; the exact amount is on the pack. Young animals under 6 months and pregnant or nursing females: unlimited. Hamsters hoard food, so check hidden stores in the cage. Also offer hay for exploring and digging, and keep fresh drinking water available at all times. Transition over 4 weeks: week 1 one quarter new food, week 2 one half, week 3 three quarters, week 4 new food only.
